Empowering seniors begins with creating opportunities that go beyond routine activities. At the heart of our Active Ageing Centre, the Silver Brews & Bites Café is redefining what it means to age actively—one cup of coffee at a time.
Inspired by Japan’s Ibasho Café and Odekake Rehabilitation model, this initiative was thoughtfully designed to engage male seniors after retirement, offering them not just a place to contribute but a chance to rediscover purpose, pick up new skills, and build meaningful friendships.
From Barista Course to Café Crew
6 male seniors took on the challenge of learning something completely new. After completing a certified barista course, they now confidently prepare and serve coffee and meals at the café to fellow seniors attending our centre’s daily programmes. On average, each session serves about 20 patrons—transforming every café shift into an opportunity for connection and community building.
More Than Just Coffee
Silver Brews & Bites isn’t just a place to enjoy refreshments. It’s a space where seniors apply skills from past careers, practice new ones, and most importantly, find purpose and joy in their daily routine. Conversations flow easily over counters, friendships form, and laughter becomes part of the ambience.
This initiative has helped many seniors step out of their comfort zones—proving that it’s never too late to try something new or to find confidence in unfamiliar roles.

The café continues to foster a strong sense of belonging and mutual respect. It’s a reminder that ageing doesn’t mean stepping back—it can also mean stepping into new roles, forging new relationships, and contributing in ways that are deeply personal and fulfilling.
